worsnup - does anyone have a connection
« on: Thursday 24 April 08 07:16 BST (UK) »
i have the marriage of alice (alicia) gribbin to a philip h worsnup in stockport in 1911. this is quite an unusual name. does anyone have any links to this family.
i think i have found his birthin stockport in 1889 from the i.g.i. and if i have the right family his parents are  philip worsnup and mary ann possnett. again if this is the correct there are 3 other siblings jane, sarah jane and john.
any help appreciated
regards

On GenesReunited theres 1 page of Worsnups mentioned, but 15 pages of Worsnops, have you considered this spelling?

I wasn't saying you had the wrong spelling for your branch, but over time, names tended to get spelt as they were heard due to poor literacy, so maybe further back, you will find the spelling varies. So you could still find a connection with a branch that went with the alternative spelling..... (I've found this on a branch I am doing for my husband - Shakespeare, Shakespear, Shakspear, Shaxper, etc, the spellings get more obscure the further back you go)  ::)

Good Luck
Cat  :)

ps. on the IGI, the christenings for Philip and brother Thomas are "Worsnup" but brother Joseph is "Worsnap". There are also "Worsnip" children/marriages so examples of how spellings can vary over time and from area to area....

Forgive my interuption, just out of interest there was a shop in Northenden, Manchester on Church Road that was Worsnops, my auntie used to work there many years ago, the shop has long since gone now though.
