Toronto Canada- Looking for an Ancestor
« on: Thursday 24 April 08 07:26 BST (UK) »
Hello

I wonder if anyone can offer some advice in trying to trace an English ancestor who went to Canada.

In October 1911 Arthur Weaver born 1870 in Cinderford Forest of Dean went to Canada. Prior to this he had been living at 2 Market Street Poole where he had a Bakers shop. He was married to Temperance Maud Weaver nee Bayliss.
According to his divorce papers he was there until at least Oct 1914. i do not know why the divorce papers mention this date as the petition was filed on Dec 1914.
He was living at 333 Seaton Street Toronto Ontario. I believe he was with Clementina Baylis(s) born 1880. He had run away with his wife's sister.

The divorce was heard in 1915 and he did not attend. At the moment we assume he remained in Canada but do not know. Nothing more is known of Arthur Weaver from Oct 1914 onwards.

I know its a tall order to find him but any ideas would be welcomed.

Thank you in anticipation

All the best

http://www.findmypast.com/passengerListPersonSearchStart.action - I'm really having trouble finding either Arthur or Clementina on the passenger lists. There's several entries with only initials or no first name that could possibly be them...

http://pagesofthepast.ca/ - you could try the Toronto Star archives.

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/archivianet/passenger/001045-100.01-e.php - you can also look up a list of ships that left in October 1911, although it would be a big job to go through all of them by hand.

Incidentally, where was Clementina in 1901? I'm having trouble finding her on the census.

Hello Jorose
Thank you for all your efforts on my behalf. I will have a further look at the Findmypast passenger lists but I think when I looked last night the one with a surname and the right initial were before 1911.

Clementina was born in Llanbaddock 1880 Monmouthshire but Í cannot find her on 1901 or 1891 census. Her widowed mother appears living in Llanbaddock. The inference from the divorce papers suggest Arthur Weaver had established a liason with Cementina as far back as 1899 - just 2 years after he married Temperance. As he lived in Poole she must have lived in the area also I would think.

I will try the other websites you have suggested and I really appreciate all your hard work. Its going to take time but hopefully Arthur Weaver will turn up

Many thanks

Ah! I think I see Clementina in Swanage, Dorset in 1901. On http://www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ she is under 'Baylin', and is a parlour maid. Not too far from Poole.

Hello Jorose - well done - I will have a look at this. As you say quite a convenient location to Poole.
My guess is they would have stayed in Canada to stay out of the way of the scandal. I will have to approach the authorities there to find a marriage.

They arrived just after the 1911 census and I really could do with finding a later one.

Thanks again

On the 1891 Wales census Mary Baylis is living with a son EJ Baylis, 14 years old and daughter C Bayliss, age 10 years old, civil parish Llaubadoe.  It says "by bridge" for the address, same as in the 1881.
