The Great Southern Hotel/the Railway Hotel which over looks Eyre Square in the heart of Galway city.Does any one know where I may read any accounts of what it may have been like to be employed here in the 1890s & again in the 1930s, departments I'd be interested in would be bellboy/porter & kitchen staff Thank you Nipy

Hi Nipy, have you tried searching Tom kenny's " Old Galway " Site. He owens the book shop in Eyre Square and runs a section in the local paper. He has been most helpful to me and even posted "look-up " request for me in his colum.
Migky ;)

Cheers Migky, I really enjoyed that ,there were two pictures of the Railway  Hotel , one was of Eyre Square with the hotel in the background 1890s the other was 1900 all pictures give a little write up which was interesting, but there is some great picture on there of old Galway you can really get a atmosphere for how it may have been.I really enjoyed seen the Hay market (there are two types of pictures  for the hay market)& the fish market.Really recommend any one with a interest in old Galway to take a look .Once again thank you.-Nipy

These are the type of cloths my grandmothers would have worn back then. My cousins tell me they are they same thing they seen our grandmothers wearing. Photos taken byt the great Albert Kahn, who photograghed a great deal of ireland and the rest of the world back in the early 1900's

Hello Nipy,

Have a look at this site. www.hotelmeyrick.ie/hotelmeyrick/index.asp?pi=351 I was searching for a book about the Hotel as something must have been produced for its centenary. The hotel is over one hundred and fifty years old.

More about the hotel is in the Jet Setter magazine http://tinyurl.com/5xc24p

Have you any older ancestors who might have been there when Prince Louis Napoleon
of France dropped in for lunch in 1857?
