1891 scotland cencus
« on: Saturday 26 April 08 21:26 BST (UK) »
Can anyone find me the Blessington family in Haddington, East Lothian on the 1891 cencus?

They are;-
 John Blessington, b1859, Dirleton,East Lothian
 Margaret Blessington b 1864, Ireland
 Myles Blessington b 1884, Haddington
 Francis Blessington b1885 Haddington
 John Blessington b 1887, Haddington
 Alice Blessington,b 1890, Haddington

I know that they moved to Burton on Trent around this time, but I cannot find them on the English cencus, so I am presuming that they were still in Scotland .

 Cheers,  Pat.
Names;- Beard -Worcestershire

Hi Pat, was in Edinburgh GRO on Monday. Looked for your Blessington Family. Not  a common name in Scotland. Very few entries in 1891 census. No Blessington family registered in Haddington as far as I could ascertain. Tried for E. Lothian area in general too, but nothing I'm afraid. The ones I did find in the rest of Scotland didn't match up with any of the christian names for your family. These other Blessington's might have a link with your ones but will need more info. Will be visiting GRO  again in near future if you want more help.

Thanks  Doddie, I may get back to you on this one. I wasn't sure when the family moved from Haddington to Burton on trent,

There are definately other branches of the Dolan family still in Scotland in 1891, but the Blessingtons are a mystery. They seem to dissapear whenever the word cencus is mentioned.

The Blessingtons moved from Leitrim, Ireland to Haddington sometime in the mid 1880's. Margaret Dolan is supposed to have been born in ireland in 1861, but I can't find her birth. Her mother, Mary Lee, died in House Crook,North Berwick, in 1865, and I am not altogether convinced that Margaret wasn't actually born there,  then lumped with her 6 siblings as being born in Ireland  on later cencuses.

So, if you do come across a Margaret Dolan, born North berwick abt 1861, I would be interested.

Thanks again for your help,

Cheers, Pat.

Sorry Doddie, I've made a mistake there - it was the Dolan family that moved from Ireland to Scotland .The Blessingtons were already there.
