His Service Record covering 1892 to the end of WW1 is on Ancestry - http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/1114/miuk1914a_083915-00957/887714?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.co.uk%2fcgi-bin%2fsse.dll%3fdb%3dBritishArmy%26gss%3dsfs28_ms_db%26new%3d1%26rank%3d1%26msT%3d1%26gsfn%3dAlfred%2bJohn%2bThomas.%26gsln%3dconquest%26MSAV%3d0%26uidh%3de13&ssrc=&backlabel=ReturnSearchResults

He ended up as a Battery Sergeant Major. The army knew him as Alfred John Thomas. As his record is in the 'pension' files it suggests he died before the end of WW2, as these files were sent  to replace the originals lost in the fire in 1940, So they were were no longer required by the pensions dept. Actually they were not lost in the fire. So there is a slightly burnt different set in Ancestry's WW1 Service Records.

Spike Island is in Cork Harbour.

He had a younger brother James who also served in the Royal Artillery.
