Expulsion in 1914
« on: Sunday 27 April 08 19:40 BST (UK) »
Hello there!

I'm trying to get information about a Jacob Edel who was in Britain from about 1901 until he was sent back to Germany in 1914.

Does anyone know if records relating to this expulsion might still exist and if so, where?

Many thanks

Ashley

Are you sure he was expelled? After the outbreak of the war he would have been interned, before the outbreak of the war as far as I know there would be no reason to expell him.

Thanks Stan - all very interesting.  Family memory can be so wrong!

Maybe it was the fact that he had fathered 3 illegitimate children by 2 sisters that made him want to go back?

He must have been quite a charmer.

FindMyPast lists a Jakob Edel born 1880 left Liverpool, England 1908 for Quebec Canada. Checked for Edels leaving UK 1900-1920 and nothing else that matches.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks for that information.

His first child was b 1906 in Liverpool and the other two in 1911 and 1912 in Edmonton, so he could have gone to Canada and then come back.  It looks interesting!

Are there any documents relating to those coming back from Canada??

Ship records for those coming back would be at the NA in Kew, but are not indexed in any way, sadly. (Also, remember that the shipping records on FindMyPast do not include the vast majority of those who went to Europe, except in the case where the ship stopped at a European port on its way to more distant locales. Passenger lists for ships coming and going to/from Europe to the UK were not kept, frustratingly).

The fellow who went to Canada in 1908 seems like he's traveling with a possible wife Regina, children Lisbeth and George, and sure enough in the 1911 census under 'Edl' there's 'Josab', wife Regina, children Elizabeth and George in Saskatchewan.

Is yours related to the Jacob G. Edel who married in London in 1916 or the Yakoub (Jack) Edels who became a British citizen in Manchester in 1921?

The Gazette (http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/ ) has a record relating to a Jacob Edel from 1936:
Quote
LIST of ALIENS to whom Exemptions under Section 7 of the Aliens Restriction (Amendment)
Act, 1919, have been granted up to 31st May, 1936. The Name printed in larger type is that in
respect of which the Exemption has been granted; then follow the former Name or Names and the Occupation or Business of the Alien or Aliens:

D. E. W.; Jacob Gerrit Edel; Hairdresser, 18, Ampthill-Square, NW1.

Several other entries have the first as the name of a business (eg. one starts HERMES TRAVEL BUREAU), and a 1934 entry shows that Jacob Gerrit Edel at one point was working with Arthur Valentine Watson under the style or firm of Edel and Watson, so D. E. W. could be ?, Edel and ? (Watson?).

Thanks for that information - if the one who went to Canada was still there in 1911 then he can't be the right one.

All I have on this one is that he was the father of the 3 children, probably by two different sisters and that he returned to Germany about 1914.

His illegitimate son later changed his name to Condor (!) and seems to have destroyed a lot of family documents.  I'm trying to help Jacob's grand-daughter learn more about him.

In the 1901 census all I could find was a jacob Erdel living in London - he was a printer whereas mine is refered to as a commercial traveller on the birth certificate.
