Cen 1851 Abingdon lookup please
« on: Sunday 27 April 08 22:39 BST (UK) »
I am hoping I may have found my elusive Fry's.

Could I get a check done please of Abingdon for a family of the name FRYER.

William/William Francis
Elizabeth/Betsey
Charlotte dau
William son.
And possibly another daughter?

I know they were in Abingdon for cen 1861 under the name FRY. But it has only just come to light that they might have been FRYER's at this earlier time.

Thanks in advance
Kiwigal

Thanks Karenlee.
Looks like them. Elizabeth doesn't seem to know where she was born, in cen 1861 she states she is from Wiltshire ::).

Probably the slop maker, refers to the frock maker she was in 1861

Hubby keeps changing his name, william/william francis/ francis william. My brain is stating to feel a bit fried!

many thanks again

Hi  :)

as I grew up in Abingdon, I take an interest in the history of the town.

Apparently there were a lot of "Slop makers" there and it refers to work clothes makers. They sewed clothes used for work as opposed to fancy and fine dresses and suits.

Nothing sloppy about that  ;D

Now that's interesting. I wonder if that is where the term "sloppy dresser" come from?

Thanks for the info

Kiwigal i found these burials at St Helens

12 Jan 1845 William Francis Fry of Bury Lane age 6 weeks
Aug 3 1852 Mary Fry of Bury Lane, Infant
Aug 3 1852 Elizabeth Fry of Bury St, Infant

There is a chance that these are William and Elizabeths as they lived in Bury Lane

And this one seems to be a definate as age fits

Dec 21 1847 Elizabeth Fry of Bury Lane age 6 years

Let me know if i can help you anymore :) :)
