children given mothers maiden name
« on: Wednesday 30 April 08 15:30 BST (UK) »
I registered with Scotlandspeople & started looking for the Briggs children. I can't find any with the surname Briggs. I searched for them under their mothers maiden name of Matthew & I can find all of them. This leads me to believe that Alexander Briggs & Jane Matthew-Murray never married. It also leads me to believe that Janes' 1st husband, George Murray, was alive & not dead. Would I be terribly far off in assuming this.
Thanks for any insight.
Lisa

Hi

You don't give any details of the years involved but possibly a copy of one of the childrens birth certs may shed some light?

Have you checked for a Briggs/Murray marriage before or after the first child was born

If the births were pre-1901 - have you checked the 1901 census (or earlier) for George Murray

Just spoke to my dad about this again. He was told that Alexander or Jane needed their marriage register for something (he doesn't remember what). They wrote to Scotland to get it & there wasn't one. He was told the reason why is that Scotland must of "lost" their marriage register. Does anyone know if there are other cases of "lost" marriage records?
I have searched a 24 yr span on SP & find 1 Briggs/Murray marriage, but when I type in both or one of their forenames I get 0. This along with the children being registered as Matthew really leads me to believe Alexander & Jane weren't married in Scotland. I did tell Dad about them being registered as Matthews', to which he laughed & told me it could be, but couldn't sped any light.

Hi Carole,
I'm searching the yrs 1891-1925 for the marriage. I can find gramma & all her siblings in the appropriate years they were born, registered as Matthew or so I'm thinking. I am going to get credits for SP but want to keep the "wasting credits on wrong people" to a minimum. I should be able to do this as I have quite a bit of information on places where they lived.

Lisa- what way are they listed in 1891 and 1901 census records? Although that is no guarantee that a marriage did take place.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi Lisaw,

Have you found the marriage of George Murray to Jane Matthews? If so, have you susbsequently found a Death Certificate for him?

Have you got any certificates with exact dates already? This would help.

Hi again Carole & aghadowey

Thanks for being interested. George & Jane Murray can be found on the 1891 census & Alexander & Jane Briggs can be found on the 1901 census. I have them as:

1891 census.
143 Lochee Rd St. Mary Dundee
George Murray 27 groom born Edinburgh
Jane wife 25 born New Machar Aberdeen
William G son 2 born Dundee
Jane daughter 7 days born Dundee

William G. born 1889, Jane born 1891

1901 census
125 Kidston St Hutchesontown Govan Glasgow
Alexander Briggs 30 bricklayer born Dundee
Jane 30 wife born Aberdeen Aberdeenshire
Minnie Briggs daughter 6 born Dundee
Henretta Briggs daughter 4 born Dundee (my Gramma)

They all emigrated to Canada in the 1920's. I think I'm looking in Canada for Alexander & Janes marriage.

I have my grammas marriage register from Scotland year 1919. I have the dates they emigrated. I have places & addresses of where they lived. I have family "stories".

Thanks to everyone.

I also know my Gramma was born Apr 18 1897 & her sister Rena was born Apr 18 1906.

Hi

The first thing that strikes me is that children William & Jane Murray are on the 1891 census but not the 1901 with Jane & Alexander Briggs - so where were they?

Secondly - Jane is 25 in 1891 and 30 in 1901 (I know ages could vary between censuses)

Do you possibly have 2 separate families here?
