William McIntyre
« on: Wednesday 30 April 08 19:16 BST (UK) »
On the 1881 England census, William McINTYRE is shown at 132 Bleinheim Street, Liverpool, with his wife Mary (nee Trainor) and their son, John Traynor McINTYRE.

I am struggling to decipher William's birthplace from the record on Ancestry (in part because my Irish geography isn't too hot) and would really appreciate any ideas...

Census Ref: RG11/3598 Folio 127 Page 32

It has brough my McIntyre research to a grinding halt as I'm lookig for clues as to where to go next...

Many thanks,
Susie

Hi Susie

Both Findmypast and the LDS show it as Merive. A quick internet search suggests it is in Galway but othrs may know better.

Gerard - thanks you so so much!  ;D
When you have as little to go on as I do, every little helps.
I really appreciate your research for me...so thanks!

Will check out Donegal! Mevagh does indeed sound like a promising line of enquiry...

Hello Susie,

What was William's profession that might be a hint too to where he came from.

Also profession's use to run in the family so maybe he had some skill he carried from Ireland?

Was William wife Irish? That could be another hint.

Hi Gerard,

Thanks for your message.

William is listed simply as a 'labourer' on the 1881 census in Liverpool.
I have not yet located him on earlier census listings, and do not know what year he moved from Ireland.

His wife, Mary TRAYNOR, was from Tipperary, but they married in Liverpool, and so may have met in the city rather than in Ireland.

Hello Susie I had a look and using the wildcard search on place name and surname Donegal area looks the most likely of course might be wrong Galway and Tippeary have being mentioned so

I found one possible in Tipperary

Mc Intire Ellen Liskinlahan Borrisokane Tipperary

In Galway you have

Mc Entyre Mary Chapel St. Ahascragh Galway
Mc Intire James Carrowmanagh Dunmore Galway
Mc Intyre John Cloonkeen Dunmore Galway
Mcintyre Denis Village of Spiddle Kilcummin Galway

Griffiths was taken around 1850 depending on the area and does not list all households

Hi Susie

Do you have their marriage certificate or any other proof they were married in Liverpool?

I ask because I can find nothing on FreeBMD for a marriage of Mary Traynor and the 1871 Census is not very conclusive.
