William Burk c1821 Monaghan
« on: Friday 02 May 08 17:17 BST (UK) »
Looking for any help with William Burk c1821 born in County Monaghan.

William crossed to Kirkintilloch, Dunbarton, Scotland before 1841, where he is shown on the census that year as a 21 year old labourer.

Interestingly also shown at the same address is a Catherine Burk aged 56 and another Catherine aged 12, possibly his mother and sister?

Thanks

Mike Nash

Civil registration of births, deaths and Catholic marriages in Ireland began 1864 (from 1845 for other marriages). For earlier dates you need to check for church records (if they exist) but to do so you need to know the family's religion and where they lived (parish if not actual townland not just a county).
There are no lists of passengers travelling between Ireland and Scotland as both were part of U.K.
Scottish civil certificates have much more detail than Irish ones. Scottish marriage certificates (after 1855) should list names of both parents as well as fathers' occupations so if William Burk did get marriaed in Scotland after 1855  you will nee to look for the marriage certificate for more information. The same information should appear on William's Scottish death certificate (if the informant knew the details).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
