Burial Laws in Ireland
« on: Saturday 03 May 08 20:53 BST (UK) »
Where are those elusive ancestors buried ??? Prior to the "Act of Easement of Burial Bills" which was passed  in 1824 it was normal practice for Irish Catholics to conduct a limited version of their own funeral services in Protestant cemeteries. The first burial at Glasnevin in Dublin took place in 1832.

Large changes in the traditions of the burial of the dead took place throughout Europe during the late 18th century. www.protestantcemetery.it/english/content/view/13/27

The parents of unbaptised and still-born babies weren't allowed to bury their children in consecrated ground. The Catholic Church refused such interments as it was thought such deaths had a stigma attached to them. The bodies were often buried secretly and in darkness. This practise continued in some areas until 1963, when the Catholic Church changed its teaching on the matter. There are monuments to these young children in many parts of Ireland.  www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,269526.0.html
