Searching for townland Lough Beg area
« on: Wednesday 07 May 08 22:42 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find a townland address in order to check the 1901 census for my grandfather's family.  A death certificate only states Lough Beg, but I can't find this on the Antrim townland list, or could this just mean that Lough Beg was the name of the road?

Assistance from someone with local knowledge would be much appreciated please!

Road names are a fairly recent thing in the country. Suspect it's an area rather than a townland:

(lots of other references on Google)

Thank you aghadowey.

I had checked Google but was trying to associate the "address" with a townland. Although, if Lough Beg is sufficient for a death certificate perhaps that was the only address.  I imagine it could refer to an  isolated rural property back in 1906, especially as the area is a national nature reserve today.

There would have been a townland name for the place they lived but perhaps 'Lough Beg' was the address the informant gave when registering the death. Have seen it happen in other areas.

Thank you aghadowey.

How do I find the names of the townlands that are in the Lough Beg area?  I am hoping there aren't too many as i will have to request a census search by process of elimination until I find my family!

Family sources have suggested that Toomebridge and New Ferry were  where the family were originally.  I can see that both are close to Lough Beg on the map but don't know if they would be described as just "Lough Beg" locally. I have already had a census check made for Culnafay.  Where else could I try please?

Thank you once again aghadowey.

What a useful web site!  not only does it give me the townland names I was searching for but there is also a very good map of the area......and by way of a bonus the site owner is researching one of my family names!

Thank you
