Hi Petmas

You can search the 1901 and 1911 census for free at www.automatedgenealogy.com

Was Charles married when he came to Canada?  Do you know where he might have went?

Hi Karen, thanks for that, I doubt he was married, his wife cut the throats of their 3 kids and unsuccessfully her own May 1890. She was sent to Broadmoor asylum August 1890. Charles drops out of the system after that although there is a death  of one in Newcastle in 1898 ( also  records of a birth there in 1863 so probably not my man). On the basis he was a Customs Officer in Liverpool at the time I'm thinking he may have optyed for a fresh start-who wouldn't. Pete

Oh my Pete, what a tragic story  :'(

Have you checked www.ancestorsonboard.com for a passenger list?

There are couple of Charles Charlton born England in the census, but the years don't match  :-\

What is the reference for the birth of the Charles in Newcastle in 1863? I can't find him (say in the earlier censuses).

There does seem to be a Charles Charlton b. 1865 in Elswick (Newcastle) in 1891, if somebody can pull up the full details for this census we can see if it might be yours Charles.  If it is, that makes the 1898 death look much more likely.
Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Hi Jorose, I searched Genes Reunited and there are 3 people on there with  Charles Charltons  b 1862, 2 in Houghton and 1 in Harrington all Co Durham. I have emailed them to find out if they have death dates. There seem to be none b 1862-4 in Middx on the 1891 census. This would have been less than a year after the killings so where was he? Cheers Pete
