Can anyone help me find the birth of Catherine McKenna. She always states Charlottetown PEI to be her place of birth in all census I have found on her return to England - her year of birth approx 1841.

She married Henry Burton 24th April 1869 in Halifax, Nova Scotia and they returned to England. On her marriage cert parents are listed as Patrick & Elizabeth McKenna. Family belief is they originally hailed from Co. Cork in Ireland.

Dont know where to look next

Welcome to Rootschat.

This won't help a great deal, but according to her age given on both her marriage cert and 1881 London census, she would have been born 1844 or 1845.

Did her parents remain in Canada?  Births in Canada for this time period are usually difficult to find...altho if they were Catholics it might be a little easier.

According to PEI Govt website
http://www.gov.pe.ca/health/index.php3?number=1020357&lang=E

they started registering births in 1840, so you might be in luck.  (I wish I was so lucky with my Nova Scotia ancestors).
Contact them.

Good luck, Nick

Welcome to rootchat...Many births & baptisms for several Catherine McKenna,
but not with your named parents listed...
http://www.gov.pe.ca/cca/baptismal/search_index.php

However there is this directory listing in

Hutchinson's Prince Edward Island Directory, 1864 - Charlottetown
McKenna Elizabeth, wid Patrick,  h Fitzroy n Queen
http://www.islandregister.com/hutchinson4.html

So going back to the birth & baptisms, there is a Patrick McKenna
Mother: Elizabeth McLean  Father: Patrick McKenna
born October 15th 1849 and baptised October 23rd. 1849
Church:St. Augustin R. C. ,  South Rustico ( 15 minutes from Charlottetown)

http://www.gov.pe.ca/cca/baptismal/detail.php?id=63559

Might be the parents you are looking for...hopefully more digging will help

Couldn't get on to the census yesterday but if you can look through them, 1maybe there is more on this family...
http://www.islandregister.com/ceninfo.html or http://www.edu.pe.ca/paro/census/default.asp
The trouble is only heads of households are named, with ridiculous age ranges listed as in this one which you could look into :
Oct. 13, 1841 Census of lot 36 records the family of Patrick McKenna, he is between the ages of 16 and 45 with 3 males and 1 female under age 16 and 1 female 16 to 45 and another female age 45 to 60. All 7 paid their own passage and he has 7 years expired from his 999 year lease. He has 100 acres under lease of which 12 are arable and his land is rated 1st best.

earlier on page Read the Song words to The Little Hills of Monaghan ...

1848 Pat McKenna of lot 30 has a lease in lot 48, lease 181.

Dec.15,1849 “ Of Patrick McKenna, a native of Co. Monaghan, parish Erigle, sailed for PEI. http://users.adelphia.net/~abeagan/pei1848-65.htmby his brother Peter McKenna, Milbury, Ms” The Boston Pilot. From ads placed in Boston’s Catholic newspaper. .....There are several Patricks on P.E.I...but this is still interesting....never know...
