Sancti thank you. Now I'm going to try and get the birth certificate for one of the children Maude Violet. From that i hope to get Maudes mother's maiden name. Then I hope to get the marriage certificate of Archibald and wife Mary and both the fathers names. Thank you for taking an intersest in this matter

If the above Archibald is the right one then it looks like he married locally

1882 RENNIE ARCHIBALD married RITCHIE MARY ANN at NEWINGTON EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN

How confident are you that he was born in 1855? There are some births for 1856 on SP

The marriage may not be the right one Sancti. This Archilbald and and Mary A R Rennie look to be in West Lothian for the 1891 census.

Monica, thank you. I did make contact with the writer and it is the same family. We have had some missed emails. But seem to have caught up to each other now.

Always a pity when that happens  :'(

Reading through some of the other posts by that person, it would seem one of the sisters (Margaret/Maud?) went on to become a nun. What that tells us, if that was correct, is that family was likely to have been Roman Catholic (?). I say that only because if Archibald Andrew was born in 1854 rather than 1855, you will not find his birth on the Old Parish Records in Scotland as these are for the Established Church of Scotland (Presbyterian) records. As I am sure you know, official registration only began in Scotland from 1855, so Archibald may have missed the start (hopefully not!).

I think your current thinking is the way to go. Start with what you know, the births of one of the children. From that, look for the marriage (hopefully it wasn't abroad  ::) with Archibald posted abroad as he was when Archibald son was born in Malta) and from there, with confirmation of fathers' names, work back....

Let us know how you get on  :)
