It is a bit confusing Patrish!

In 1871 - when Elizabeth was living with John, she said 83 years.

That would make her born 1788,  which is the year Bev. was given, and if this is them in 1851 and 1861  -  which we don't know  -  then her age would be about right -1788 / 1790 / 1791.

However, the William in this pair was apparenty born 1784, which is 14 years younger than Bev. has the age   :(

Well done,  Alli    ;D

That gives  John b. 1825 as well   ;D  ;D

NB: mis-indexed as Harries.

If this is the right family - and it certainly has possibilities - then the age Bev. was given for William does not appear correct  :(

Has to be Lace Hand.

As a matter of further interest, only these children of John & Mary HARRIS Shoe-maker of Chard Borough appear in the St Mary Baptisms:
No 328 21 Feb 1847 John
No 836 12 Dec 1852 William
No 837  --  Dec 1852 Joseph

Well, on An**y it certainly looks like Lea Hand.

But - I went and had a look on FindMyPast and I believe it could be Lace Hand.

There are several others on the same page - was there lace making in Chard then?

William was certainly a sweep in 1851 and 1861  ;D

Chard was renowned for its lace:  I almost know the occupants of Old Town Buildings by heart, I've looked at them so often!

Somerset & Devon had a huge influx of lacemakers c1817 due to the machine breaking etc in Loughborough.  Many moved away in the late 1840s, when lacehands were being laid off in Chard, and others that remained found it necessary to change their occupation.

Chard St Mary Marriage solemnized by Banns
No 260 16 Sep 1846
John HARRIS full age Bachelor Shoemaker of Chard Parish
son of William HARRIS, Labourer
Mary Elizabeth CORNELIUS full age Spinster Dressmaker of
Chard Borough dau of Joseph CORNELIUS, Smith
by me, Edwd GODFREY Curate
Witnesses:  William HARRIS;  Eml MUTTON [Parish Clerk]
All parties provided a signature.

I have a theory for investigation concerning Henry HARRIS bap 04 Dec 1841, son of William & Elizabeth HARRIS of Chard Bor, Shoemaker.  There was a young couple of those names not born in County residing at High Street in 1841:  William, recorded aged 25, Cordwainer, possibly an elder son of William & Elizabeth of Old Town Buildings[?] and Elizabeth 28.  Sadly, there are burials for an Elizabeth aged 33 on 05 Dec 1841 and Henry aged 4 mos on 13 Mar 1842.  Can SKS see if William is in Chard in 1851 as he may have remarried, perhaps more than once?  It may be him in Chard High St in 1861 with wife Ann, son Francis H. 13 and an EVANS nephew.  Death of a wife could explain the appearance of grandsons in the household of William senr, and Sarah Elizabeth in the household of John & Mary Elizabeth?
