Biggest rip-off yet
« on: Thursday 15 May 08 20:05 BST (UK) »
Forgive me if there has already been something posted about this, but I'm seething.  A Rootschatter pointed me towards the http://www.bmdregisters.co.uk/ site found via the National Archives.  It has lots of Nonconformist records.  I found the baptismal record that I want, and paid £5 for 10 credits.  But getting a look at that record cots 5 credits.  I used the advanced search to find another record I wanted.  That apparently cost 1 credit.  So I couldn't view the record because I only had 4 credits left.  In other words, looking at a single baptism record cost a fiver.  This is the most outrageous case of profiteering I've come across.  Even if you're rich, please don't encourage them by using them.
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

I totally agree with you and I seem to remember when they first came online similar comments were made.

Unfortunately for us and very fortunately for them there are always people who find them the last resort and unable to view the records in any other way and so they will keep making money out of us.  Seems its the way of the world these days.  >:(

I made the mistake the first time I used the site of not reading exactly what the credits cost and losing a fiver's worth without realising it.  However I did crack a brickwall.

Subscriptions to http://www.bmdindex.co.uk/ now gives you unlimited access to the new BMD Registers. I'm on my 2nd year and the records are second only to ancestry & findmypast. Well worth it IMO.

its also says you wont be charged for looking at a image you`ve already looked at. Well i paid 10 pounds and got charged for looking at a image i`d already looked at and I`m now stuck with 3 credits left.
"Why are the credits priced at 50p

The variation in images, styles and formats has meant that in many cases the records have to be scanned manually. The transcription of these records is also difficult due to the variation in format and content. This has resulted in high project costs."

Yeah right as This is rip off britain we`ll join the gravy train more like.

suttontrust,

Have you (or other complainants) contacted the site, explained your concern(s) (in a non-emotive and straightforward way), and sought an explanation and (if appropriate) recompense.

Sometimes such an approach works!

You can view images for a certain length of time (cant remember how long) without using further credits. After that time limit you have to use more credits. I agree the credit usage is high, same as Scotlandspeople. Unfortunately, not all companies are able to provide information for free as we would like.

Annual sub is £68.95 compared to Ancestry monthly sub of £25. There are other less pricey options to bmdindex but I went for the Personal Premium for unlimited access.
