Hi Rick
Thank you so much for all those births thats brilliant.
I have found these two births for William Goodman.

William Goodman chr 13 May 1744 Yelden Bedford
father George Goodman born about 1714 died 11 April 1744
who married 1May 1741 to Elizabeth Clarke
so it looks like his father died before William arrived.

Then I found this one
William Goodman chr 8 June 1744 St Martins in the Fields Westminster London
father Richard Goodman and Margaret.
I feel maybe the first one could be my William but it's all guess work isn't it..
Thanks for your help. Kind regards Christine.

It can be difficult when there is no evidence with which to cross reference information.  I think that it is probably best to be on the cautious side .  Chris Reynolds who runs the Genealogy in Hertfordshire site wrote an interesting essay entitled "Right Name, Wrong Body."   A cautionary tale indeed!
