All of the Bankheads that I found appeared to be either single properties or very small hamlets very distant from any other villages.

Thanks for that, David
I'm sure you've hit the nail on the head. In other counties I've found supposed villages that turned out to be a single farmhouse.
Cheers

Hi Bob
Donald's map of 1774 has a Bankhead in Kirkandrews on Esk - it looks like a hamlet of about 5 houses at that time.
The MIs of Kirkandrews contain quite a few mentions of Bankhead - there seem to be Littles, Armstrongs, Bells and Wards there at different times.
Hope this helps
Bridget

That's tremendous, Bridget!
It's exactly where I hoped it would be.
Thanks a million,
Bob

Glad you have found the correct Bankhead.  Have you seen this site?

http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/longtown20/kirkandrewsindex.html

It has MIs for Kirkandrews on Esk, as well as other churches in the Longtown area - I'm just going to have a good look as it may prove useful to me too.

Yes, Claire - a very useful site. I also like the aerial views of the Pele Tower & church which are on www.visitcumbria.com (or co.uk).
Happy hunting (& thanks)
