Two of the whalers operating out of Berwick in the early 1800s were the "Norfolk" and the "Lively".

We have now transcribed the Inventory of the Personal Estate of Alexander Luke... and it states that Alexander Luke Coldstream "sometime Master of the Perseverance South Sea Whaler afterwards Feuar in Coldstream in the County of Berwick"....

not sure 100% of spelling of ship but this is what it looks like.

I live in Coldstream, Berwickshire at No.2 Luke's Brae Coldstream the home of Whaling Capt. Alexander Luke from 1826 to his death in 1854. The street, originally called Luke's Lane, is a short one named after the Captain who built seven cottages there during that period. It is also a steep hill, hence the change in name to Luke's Brae - brae being the Scottish term for hill. Though not a relative I have researched the Luke family history and will pass on what I know to you when I have time to collate it - hopefully in the next few days.

John.

Nice to hear from you Julie and Monica.

I'd prefer to e-mail my information to you, but happy to post it here if you so wish.

It's a wee while since I worked on the Luke family so I need to get my facts into order before I send them off to you.

However, I hope to do this over the next couple of days.

John.

John
Please email me again directly with your correct email address.
I have sent several emails to you and one was returned as not deliverable and none replied to by you.
Just want to verify your address etc.
There is new info on David Denham on the East Lothian section of rootschat.com. Have Esther Luke Denham's death info, found Isabella (I think it is her sister) with David after Esther's death in 1881 Canadian census etc. They have Isabella born in 1841 though...
I posted on that board and there has been a lot of help forth coming.

Sorry to be butting in here but maybe you can help me.  I am looking for a George Luke born about 1853/55 I have his marriage cert he was married in Preston Lancashire but it says he was born in Scotland.  Not sure where in Scotland had thought maybe the border region but there's nothing showing for there.

His children were Thomas, Margaret, George, Joseph and Agnes born between 1880 and 1897 all born in Preston.

Could a birth not have been registered in those days ?  I have 4 George lukes born in Angus, Stirlingshire, Berwickshire, Perthshire.

Any help would be appreciated.
