The George Luke I know was born in Coldstream in 1829 to Alexander and Isabella Luke. He emigrated to the USA(Detroit) in 1852/53. Don't think he's the man you are looking for.

Hi  Siobain,

Found your George on 1881/1891/1901 censuses, with wife Nancy and family.

1891 states his place of Birth ;D

Transcribed as born 1854 in Cross Hace, Eccles, Lancashire

Actual image  looks like- CROSS HALL, ECCLES

Think this is in Berwickshire, near Coldstream. I am no Scottish expert ( live in Australia)

Maybe a separate post for your George would bring out the Scottish experts

Trish

For Siobhan,

1861 Scottish census;

Possible siting of George, aged 5 living in household of grandmother Janet Luke, aged 68 . In Eccles,Berwickshire with Father Robert and other Lukes in household.

Trish

Father Robert Luke seems to have been born Coldstream ,

OOPS just realised this links with Monicas post. Hope it is correct.

Thank you so much it's the right one.  I haven't been doing this too long and really appreciate the help.  I'll see where I can go from here. My husband was laughing when I said the help had come from Australia !!

Kind Regards

Siobain Luke (Ireland)

Cross Hall, Eccles is/was a farm just north of the village itself.

The modern farm is vastly different nowadays.

Re birth registration.

Bear in mind that civil registration in Scotland commenced on January 1st 1855, no certs are available for pre 1855 bmd's and these earlier events will appear as parish records.
