Where in Radnorshire?
« on: Monday 19 May 08 19:18 BST (UK) »
I can't read the marriage cert i've just received. I don't have a scanner either so perhaps this won't work, however - it's worth a go.

The marriage took place in the parish of Glasbury in the county of Radnor between Thomas Prosser and Mary Griffiths on 29 Jul 1837.

Her residence at the time of marriage is "Velindre (?) in the parish of Glasbury"
His is "Lla~g~~yd in the parish of Boch~~~"
(~indicating letters i can't decipher)

Census records for Thomas Prosser have his place of birth as Broughrood but it defo doesn't say that.

Anyone have a guess at what it says?

Cheers.

xx

Hi Taffy

Velindre (or Felindre) is correct.

Will have a go at the other one ...

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Thanks Arranroots, it could well be Bochrwd - that would make some sense.
The other word looks like llangenyd but i googled that and it's Swansea.
I'll go have a read on Genuki now and see if i can find something likely.

That was my first thought also - ruled out for the same reason!

The other was the name of the church in the parish St Cynog, or Llancynog - any good?

Locals speak of a place pronounced Funny - gun - ed, but correctly Ffynnon Gynydd: its not two FFs at the beginning is it?

Going by the F's in "of full age" i'd say they're definately not F's.

It could start Gl (it's very feint which makes it even more difficult to read)  but it almost definately ends yd.

Have you found his parents in 1841 - perhaps that's where they were living?

I see them.

Ffynnongyn~ is on the next page ...  :-X ;D

I guess Thomas could just have been labouring at another property immediately before his marriage?

(Is that two sets of twins btw, or do some of the kiddies belong to a brother?)
