Englishman in Canada 1915
« on: Tuesday 20 May 08 00:22 BST (UK) »
Firstly I must tell you that I have absolutely no knowledge of Canadian research whatsoever, so please be gentle with me as I dip my toe into the Canadian water for the first time.

My mother in law told me about a member of her family who was on, and either died or survived, the sinking of the Lusitania. I did find a possible person some time ago, but dismissed him because the Lusitania passenger list said his nationality was American. His name is Harry R Frost.

Last night I looked a little further into this, and on another site discovered that his middle name is Robinson. Co-incidentally, this is family surname. I checked freebmd and found his birth in Suffolk England, registered in Dec 1/4 1872. This also ties in with the Lusitania passenger list which says that the passenger was 42.

The list also said that his place of origin was Regina SK Canada. I found him on the Ellis Island site, also with his residence as Regina, Sask., Canada. It tells me he arrived in 1915 and his age on arrival was 42. I have gathered that I need to become a paid up member to view further details about Harry. As he is the only person I wish to find out about, I wonder if anyone who is already a member would be kind enough to look up Harry's passenger record for me please?

What I would really like to know is why he went to Canada and what it says about him on his passenger record. He was on his way back home on the Lusitania in 1915 too, so doesn't appear to have emigrated. Unless he returned at a later date of course  ;). At that time, how would he have travelled from New York to Regina? Rail?

My m-in-l thinks he died in 1940 and may have married someone called Grace, but I have been unable to find his marriage in the UK on freebmd.

Many thanks for any assistance, advice, guidance.

Hi Karen, thank you for the welcome.

What fantastic information - beyond my expectations! I can't thank you enough!

Looks like Harry was on the Luisitania from NY to Liverpool when it sank on 7 May 1915, and a couple of weeks later he was sailing back to Canada on the Philidelphia. That must have been a nerve wracking journey  :P.

Good ole M-in-law - she's right again. Harry would be her uncle.

BTW, Harry was born in Snape Suffolk (rather than Small). His parents were the schoolmaster and schoolmistress there and are buried in the Snape churchyard.

Did you find Harry and Grace in the 1911?  They are in Kenora, Ontario.  Harry came to Canada in 1897 he says.
