This fits in well with the grandmother in the 1901 census:
Marriage Mar 1874
Jackson Josiah
Penketh Ellen
Prescot
8b 887

With a Mullen and Penketh, looks like we might be heading to Ireland ....  :-\

To go back to one of your original questions - have a look here:

http://www.britishsurnames.co.uk/surnames/HAYES/maps

(I usually use National Trust names for surname profiling but am unable to get onto that site)

As your Grandmother Elizabeth was registered in the Prescot District I looked for others with surname JACKSON and mothers name HAYES and found these two:

Mary J JACKSON Sept 1912 Prescot 8b 1550
Albert E JACKSON Dec 1914 Prescot 8b 1510

They may be siblings.

Hope this helps.
Robert

Found the following marriage:
Albert JACKSON and Elizabeth HEYES (not HAYES)
Sept 1911 Prescot 8b 1256

Think this must be them.

I suspected something like this might happen after I went off blindly --- never mind. But perhaps the Jackson side is correct  ;)

Back to the drawing board  ;D

Had a quick look at the 1901 and there are a few possible Elizabeth Heyes in the right area born around the right time - so I think you're going to have to purchase the Jackson/Heyes certifcate to narrow down the father's name and occupation.

Thankyou all very very much for such speedy and accurate replies.

Ruskie you are indeed right, those folks are all my Jackson clan. Great work with so little to go on.

Roma - I think you could be on to something there. Just because i've seen a picture with just my grandmother on doesn't mean there weren't any siblings. Plus if you look at them a little closer you can see some meaning, first boy from this Jackson/Heyes marriage is named Albert Edward and of course Elizabeth Heyes and my grandmother share the same first name.
Place, time everything seems to fit.

I am grateful to you for supplying certifcate details as this was the one thing i was lacking most. Armed with it i can make some more much needed headway.

Thankyou to you all

Hi Jonathan,

This site seems to be working today. Have a look to see Heyes surname distribution - it's very interesting:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/03gc/

The best way to progress is to go ahead and buy Elizabeth's birth cerificate, then come back to us with her father's name, and we'll try to track them down for you.

Good luck.

Samuel and Harriet (nee Pearson) Hayes were my great grandparents.  They all moved to Keighley.  In the 1881 Census they are all at 27 Chapel Lane, Keighley.
