help needed on stockton matter
« on: Wednesday 21 May 08 12:44 BST (UK) »
Hello
I don't know if anyone with local knowledge of Stockton may be able to help me.
My mum, Mabel Brennan (nee Egerton) was born at 1, Lucan Street, Stockton in 1926. She always spelled it Luken, but she was only four when the family moved to Manchester.
I can find no reference to either a Lucan or Luken Street, apart from one old photo of St John's Church, now demolished, in 1965, which shows the back of terraced houses on Lucan Street.
Does anyone know where Lucan Street is/was?
I believe it was a chip shop, which went bust when the shipyards began closing in the late 20s.
Thanks

Well I suppose I will be showing my age on this one.
Lucan Street was a row of 19 houses near to where the entrance of the coke works were. At one end of the street was Ford street and at the other end was Cardigan street.
I stood may a time in the queue waiting to get in to collect bags of coke(cinders as we called them)
If yo want you can buy a copy of an 1899 map of that part of Stockton for £2.50. I think they are a great help for family history.

Thank you Adam.
I have tried to look up all three streets - Ford, cardigan and Lucan - on a modern map of Stockton, but I guess all three must have disappeared by now?
My mum has very little memory of the streets.
And there's nothing wrong with showing your age!
Thanks again

Go to http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm and do a post code search on TS1 82RY (St. John's Close) this will centre the map on the location of Lucan Street, which you can see on the 1960-69 map.

Just to emphasise what an excellent resource these maps are, and it is particularly useful to have the ability to go rapidly between modern and old maps of exactly the same area.
