where is hollinside

Hi could anyone tell me where hollinside is please, on a marriage certificate for my ggrandma jane curry to william denning bates 1884 durham It states place of residence at time of marriage hollinside , not sure where this is

Hi Sue It looks like It was in lanchester would that be right ,thats where her dad george curry was born in 1825

Hollinside is on the B6296 road from Lanchester to Tow Law (High Stoop) and Wolsingham, about two miles from Lanchester.  There is a row of houses there called Hollinside Terrace which were connected with the local collieries and also Hollinside Hall (spelt Hollingside Hall on the Ordnance Survey map).  You can read a history of Hollinside Terrace if you go to the Durhamm Miner Project website at

thanks Alan, just had a look on that site It was really interesting,I think I will have a look at 1881 census to see If any of her family ( curry)or (waugh )were living there could explain why she was there
