HOLLIDAY family / Dorchester on Thames
« on: Monday 26 May 08 14:37 BST (UK) »
Looking for extra info on this family who seem to originate in the
Dorchester area, at least as far back as 1841 census.

At one point they were in charge of the Farmers Man Inn, in Rotten Row,
Dorchester, just where it meets the High Street. Any recent photos/news of
this building would be interesting, I have a 1907 photo of the Inn but
cannot find modern day mention of it?

My own link, Edgar HOLLIDAY, was born in 1888 to his single mother Ann, who
then married Thomas SELWOOD. It is believed that this Edgar is the same
Edgar who is then in the 1901 census as Edgar Green, having been adopted,
and who subsequently married in 1911 as Edgar HOLLIDAY-GREEN in Birmingham.
As yet he cannot be located in 1891, though there is an Edgar Green, aged 3,
in PETERSHAM, living as a boarder with a Lillian GREEN in the household of
John WHITE.

Assuming this is the correct person, his adoptive father William GREEN was
from Headington, and his adoptive mothers family also from Dorchester (she
was Jane GOODENOUGH prior to marriage although she herself was born in
Birmingham).

Many thanks for reading and for any details anyone may be able to provide.

Ian,

I have some fairly distant links to both HOLLIDAY and GOODENOUGH surnames, mainly in Dorchester, Shillingford and Warborough.

I've had a look at the Dorchester PR for Edgar's baptism, but can't find an entry.   I note that his probable GRO reference is:
Sep qtr 1888 Headington Vol 3a Page 763
(if you haven't got the cert, it might be worthwhile ordering as it may give a father's name).

Do you have any details for Ann HOLLIDAY ?, although I don't have an Ann in my tree of the right age, there may still be a link.

Edit:

Interestingly, Thomas and Ann(ie) were living at the Farmers Man in 1891 and in 1881, Ann(ie)'s parents were living there.   I'll see whether there is a link to my line of HOLLIDAY.

Harry, the replies are excellent, the second one in particular!
I already have the cert, no father is named but address is given as Farmers Man (which threw me for a while until I checked the census and realised it was an address!)
Ann was born around 1869, she was with her parents (George and Mary) in 1871 but have been unable to find her in 1881 so will go back and have a look at the Farmers Man again, thanks.
The marriage details are superb, the presence of Kate GOODENOUGH acts as a tie between the Green family and the Hollidays - as already stated Edgars adoptive parents were William GREEN and Jane GOODENOUGH - Jane and Kate were sisters, their mother was previously KIRBY and in 1891 Kate was with her grandparents in Dorchester.

Still hoping someone can tell me what happened to the Farmers Man....

James and Elizabeth Kirby, Kate Goodenough's grandparents, are my ggg grandparents :)

William Green is the head of the household in the 1901 census for 14 Handsworth Rd  B'ham. Bessie Kirby is in the house as well. She is my great grandmother.

Kate's sister Elizabeth is my link.
Would love to hear what you've found :)

I am coming in very late on this thread.

Alice Holliday (c.1839 - 1898) was my gr.gr grandmother through my mother's (Alice King) line.  She married William King (1840 - 1903) of Dorchester on Thames.

Alice Holliday's parents were William Holliday (1814 - ?)and Jane Treadwell (1809 - ?).

I have some possible further links back on the Treadwell side, but they need careful checking.  If you wish you can check them on my tree (David Monks) which is public.  As matters stand I appear to have William Holliday descending from the Treadwell line.  This is an error which I have to correct.  But, mutatis mutandis, it offers you the option of pursuing the Treadwells, should you wish to do so.

David.
