Frances,
What a gem you are. Thats my man, someone has misread his surname at some time. Do you think there is possibly a gravestone?

Thanks again,

John

Greetings. I am looking for information about P.H. Hood, possibly Paul Henry Hood and his connection to the British photographer Frederick Evans. A photograph in the Getty Collection is attributed to P.H. Hood. I have many questions and hope I have found the right person to help. Many thanks, Steven.

Hi, in response to your post not sure if I can help but others may be able to help. I've just looked up Frederick Evans profile. Born 26.6.1853 London and died 24.6.1943 London. Paul Henry Hood was actually the son of Matilda Foxwell and Samuel Hood who were not married when he was born on the 7.3.1850 in Cheapside London. He died as Paul Henry Hood 15.4.1944 in Saffron Walden. So from a date perspective they may have well met or known one another but not to my knowledge. Paul's occupation throughout his working career was that of an agent selling iron foundry goods, produced by his father and uncles iron foundrys.
What is the picture in the Getty collection depicting, this might help searching.
Regards

John

Hi John,

Thanks so much for this really helpful information. I've been pulling on threads and slowly putting a picture together of Paul Henry Hood's life. If I am correct about this, he was a very bright man with a keen interest in Pre-Raphaelite painting, architecture and philosophy. He corresponded with the likes of Holman Hunt, George Watts and George Bernard Shaw. He was a member of the William Blake Society (a photograph exists showing him at the unveiling of a Blake memorial that he is credited with designing) and The Ethical Society (his obit is printed in their journal of 1944). The photograph at the Getty that he is credited for is a small portrait of the photographer Frederick Evans who also hung out with the aforesaid luminaries. I have found numerous examples of bookplates from Hood's library that include his signature. The same signature appears on the mount of a photograph I am researching that shows the entrance stairway to the Chapter House at Wells Cathedral. This same stairway was photographed by Evans who is famous for his view entitled "Sea of Steps" taken in 1903 -- considered one of the greatest photographs taken in the 20th century. I am trying to ascertain if the print that I have with Hood's signature was actually authored by him, or by somebody else. I am looking for any written evidence of his interes/skill in photography or any other photographs known to have been taken by him. Any thoughts or leads on this will be hugely appreciated. Many thanks, Steven

Hi again, John. I should correct something...Evans did not "hang out" with Watts or Hunt, but he would have shared with Hood a similar interest in their work. S.
