Hello Annie,

I spent ages last night looking for something relevant on RC8, in English and Portuguese, but found nothing.

There was nothing cryptic about the Chelwood Gate/Ashdown Forest link to charcoal, just the same as the New Forest. Although thinking about it, with Chelwood Gate being fairly central to three quite large camps on the forest and given the number of horses etc, it's possible that the Portuguese may have been used for collecting forage.

Here's a link to charcoal burning (New Forest)

Annie,

Is it possible that the first numbers (287 and 511) are service numbers?
So you get: Service No./Unit/Regiment and in Bernado's case, rank as well.

Just a thought  ::)

I have an update .... from our other thread ........ !

Newport (St Woolos) Cemetery, Glamorganshire
- Antonio da Silva Amonini (Unknown date)

Quote
The actual name on the gravestone in the Newport cemetery is slightly different to that stated in the list above - Antonio Da Silva Amorim. The inscription on the gravestone states that he was "Transporte Gunene" and "Falecido Em 14.5 1921"

You were misled by the ribbon!!  ;)

All of the Allied powers had the same ribbon for their Victory Medals...And very often just a variation on the winged victory motif!! ;D ;D ;D
One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

Annie,

If you haven't done so already, I'll sort out the GRO references for Terry's list.
You know I like doing that sort of thing.  ;D

I've had a look at a couple already. I found Antonio's last night.
I'll post them later today (assuming I can find them  :))

One to go at the moment Annie.

Free BMD is extremely slow and I'm having to be inventive.
A few first names coming out of it that we didn't know before.

Be patient.  :D
