Have you tried FreeCen? They have full coverage for 1841, 1851 and 1861 in Haddingtonshire. I had a look for your Blessingtons but can't seem to find them. :(

Nor does SP or the IGI have your John's birth in 1859 - where does your dates come from?

Like Hume I have had no luck on SP. IGI and Freecen, bu t I came across a large amount of Durkans and Blessingtons in Ireland, some of them were RC This could hinder the search as most records from Old Parish Records of EstablishedChurch of Scotland. There is a Blessington ib 1851 staying with Grandparents, Learmonths in Tranent East Lothian. His the only one I have seen in East Lothian.

1881 census has the following:

GROS Ref 709 ED3 p13
8 Poldrate St, Haddington

John Blessington Head 25 Maltman b Dirleton
Bridget Blessington   Wid  mother 60 b Ireland
Alison Blessington 35 ?Mar sister Farm Servant b Ireland
Patrick Kennie boarder 23 maltman b Prestonkirk

Perhaps John was older than you thought?  It might also be a mistake in the census that he was born in Scotland.

This looks like John's birth in that case. I can understand the Blest/Blessington mistake, but Bridget/Elizabeth? ???

John Blest, born 17th September 1855 Dirleton - parents Miles Blest and Elizabeth Durcan

They show on the 1861 census as Blest:

Address: West Fenton, Dirleton, Haddingtonshire
Michial Blest, m, head, 40, ag lab, Latrim, Ireland (Leitrim?)
Biddy D. ", f, wife, 42, ag lab's wife, Latrim, Ireland
Mary ", f, dau., 19, ag lab, Latrim, Ireland
Helen ", f, dau., 17, ag lab, Latrim, Ireland
Catherine ", f, dau., 8, scholar, Dirleton, Haddingtonshire
John ", m, son, 6, -, Dirleton, Haddingtonshire

Thanks to you all,
I couldn't get online last night. To tell you what I do know of the elusive Blessingtons.
1901 cencus - John Blessington born Scotland, age 43
Margaret Blessington - wife -age 41, born Ireland
                         8 children
1891 - family visiting Ireland - word of mouth from my grandfather, eldest son of above.
1881  -Nell has the right family

Most of my other info is from 2 distant relatives also researching the family This includes John's d.o.b.as1859. I do have confirmation of his marriage to Margaret Dolan at St. Mary's, Haddington, on 2cnd Feb.1883.

I have John's father, Myles Blessington, born 1812, no location, marriage to Bridget Durkin (Note - UIDF8162A3658090D4E8774AF7839EEE31369F4), then death Haddington 1st Jan 1878.

Looking at the last post by hume24, that could be the family transcribed wrongly :- Michial Blest could possibly be Miles Blessington - the age doesn't quite tally with born 1812, but, there again, my info is not verified.

Biddy D could be Bridget Durkin - I have her born 1829, again not verified.
John Blessington seems likely, and I have no info on his siblings - this was one thing that I was trying to find.

As I have had no success at all finding the family prior to 1881, I am inclined to hope that this could be some sort of breakthrough. What do you think?

Cheers,   Pat.

The details from the 1855 John Blest birth are:

John Blest (informant not present)
Born September 17th 1855 at 4PM, West Fenton, Dirleton
Father: Miles Blest, agricultural labourer, aged 50 years, born Leitrim - Ireland
Mother: Elizabeth Durcan (John, her 8th child), aged 45 years, born Leitrim - Ireland
Marriage and other children: 1835 Ireland, 3 girls living and 1 boy living, 3 boys deceased
Birth registered 2nd October 1855 by father, Miles Blest (his mark).

I think is probably the same family. I'm unsure whether the family began as Blest and became Blessington, or whether it was just a mistake on both the census and John's birth.

That is brilliant Hume,
I have been trying to get a hold on this family for months with no luck. The information I have also names Miles's parents as Patrick Blessington and Alice Cremer, but again with nothing to verify it. Based on that, I would think that the name was recorded wrongly, especially as Miles had to make a mark rather than sign.
 John was my Great grandfather.
Thanks once again for your help, it is much appreciated.
      Cheers, Pat.
