Hi Velcro,

that's ok!  If you phone the register office and ask to check John Hayes' details before buying the certificate they won't mind doing that to be sure it's the right one, very helpful in the Guisborough register office

The other way is to get one of the children's birth certs to be sure of her maiden name

Do you have the later census for the family?

Hi
Watching you all at work is wonderful. It seems that all the pieces put together fit like a glove and Margaret's maiden name more likely to be Morrow.
Will follow up as adviced and another piece of the puzzle solved.

Many thanks to all.

Cheers

1891 census  RG12/383  Folio 123  Page 3
125 Galleywall Rd, Rotherhithe, London
Margeret J HAYES  head wid 58                  London Shoreditch
Ernest C       "       son   unm 24 Warehouseman  "   Islington
Herbert P      "         "       "    22 Outfitters Porter "   Tottenham
Harold A        "        "        "   19  Warehouse Clerk Yorks North Ormesby

And a definite link to the MORROW name in this census tho sadly no relationship shown, I imagine she's a sister:

1901  RG13/399  Folio  64  Page 1
125 Galleywall Rd, Rotherhithe, London
Margaret Hayes    head widow 69    London Hoxton

Harold        "         "          "     30 Warehouseman  North Ormesby
Helen M Morrow                  "    53 Schoolmistress (SBL)  Holborn

Will check earlier census for Margaret later

Margaret seems to have got younger with the later census!

1851 census HO107/1548  Folio  406  Page  6
44 Cannon St. Road, St. George in the East, Middlesex

in household of Anna Maria Edgell
Margaret J MORROW lodger unm 22  Mantle Maker  Hoxton

1841HO107/697/9 Folio  7 Page  7
Upper Chapman Street, St George, Tower Hamlets,  Middlesex
MORROW
Thos    55  no occupation given  b. Ireland
Margt   50                         not b. in county
Edward 20 Lithographer    "      "      "
Margt  12                           b. Middlesex

If this is the correct Margaret in these two census, then it looks as if she's sister to Edward, the Lithographer, who married a Frances and had children including the schoolteacher Helen staying with Margaret in 1901- so she would be Margaret's niece

When you get the marriage certificate confirming Margaret's surname and her father's name and occupation, if it all checks, I can give you the census information for brother Edward if you'd like it, meanwhile will leave it for now.

Kind regards, Barbara  :)
