William WILSON - Mary YOUNG marriage

Yes I realised I meant to say William's father but then you already knew it was James, ignore me, I've edited it out ad will try to stop being confused or confusing!

The marriage registration district Durham Northern covers Tanfield so it looks good!

I've been looking in the Durham BTs on the trial IGI site  familysearch labs
but Tanfield is only covered from 1765-1844

I wondered where you were leading to with that question! 
Anyway, just went on to IGI and found the record...this "James" was aged 24 at the time of the marriage, making his birth year abt 1851...it's looking better, William was born 1850!
The record says they were married in Esh, Durham...any idea where this is, perhaps in relation to Tanfield?

Esh is about 7 miles from Tanfield 3 miles from Lanchester

Hi Barbara
Just thought I'd let you know, I emailed Durham Council about the marriage certificate and have already received a reply.....they had a look but unfortunately they said the groom was listed and signed as "James Wilson" and William was not noted as the father 
What a pity, I really thought we were on to something there!
Anyway, I've now emailed Bedford Council to query that certificate, but I don't really hold out much hope as it just doesn't seem to fit with anything else I know about "our" William.
Will keep you posted.

William was not noted as the father 

If puzzled about this, they will only confirm what you already know and will not give out other information e.g. what the father's name actually was!  Otherwise no-one would buy a cert and they'd be over-run with queries I suppose!!

I wondered why they didn't let me know if any of the other info I supplied (occupations, ages etc) matched! But I suppose you're right...
Decided to take another foray into the Free BDM website, expanded my search years and found another possible marriage in Gateshead in 1881....sometimes we become a little tunnel visioned and because William and Mary's 1st child was born in 1879, I assumed they would have been married prior to that year!!
This coming from someone who's been tracing family history for about 5 years 
Anyway, I've also emailed Gateshead's register to see if that one matches.

Have you got Esther's birth cert?  I know you don't want to be buying lots but I just thought that would show if parents were married at the time (or not)
