1871 CENSUS - Poplar?
« on: Friday 30 May 08 06:54 BST (UK) »
 :)  Hello all!
Could some kind person look for the following people in 1871 -  BENJAMIN BUTCHER (b. 1813 Sussex); wife CATHERINE (b. 1803 Surrey), and perhaps daughter PRISCILLA (b. 1837 Sussex).  Sons BENJAMIN & WILLIAM were married by 1871.
In the 1861 Census the family were living at 5 Manchester Road, Poplar.
     Many thanks in anticipation.
                                                        Carol B.

Hello, Carol B,

Could this be a marriage for Priscilla Butcher?

Marriage    Dec ¼ 1863  Wandsworth 1d  766
Priscilla Butcher to either
William Ewell or
Henry James Lee.

On checking these two spouses's names in the 1871 census I found this.

1871 census
RG10/698  folio 101  page 14
8, Chapel Close,  Clapham,  Surrey

James Henry Lee  head  age 29  Fly Driver  b  Olney, Somerset.
Priscilla  wife  age   33   b  East Grinstead, Sussex
Malvina  dau  age 6  b  Wandsworth, Surrey
Walter  son  age 4  b  Tooting  Surrey
Charles son  age 2  b  Carshalton,  Surrey

I could not find anything in the 1871 census for Benjamin & Catharine Butcher that fitted.  There were entries for a Benjamin Butcher but not with a Catharine, nothing that really seemed right & would have meant that Catharine would have  died sometime 1861-'71, but again no death was found that fitted or for a remarriage for Benjamin.  So I went back to basics & found a marriage.
Benjamin to a Catharine Yarrington, 31st Aug. 1834  St Nicholas, Brighton (IGI)
I then found the bapt for
Priscilla Butcher
2nd Apr. 1837  Angmering  Sussex
This does not fit with East Grinstead in the 1871 census but is in keeping with the marriage for Benjamin & Catharine & her brother's births on the Sussex coast near Brighton
Birth entries
Benjamin Butcher
Mar ¼ 1839  Worthing  7  480
William Butcher
either   Dec ¼ 1842  Brighton  7  260
or   Mar ¼ 1843  Worthing  7  541

I have found Benjamin & Catharine in the 1851 census in South Stoneham, Hampshire, do you have the details ?  I can send a transciption if you wish.  I also have Catharine & the children plus probably Benjamin snr's parents in the 1841 census in Patching, Sussex but no Benjamin snr is with them.

I hope this all makes some sense to you, get back to me if you wish for the 1841 & '51 census details.

:D  Thank you Meliora for so much help.
Yes, a transcription of 1841 & 1851 Census would be great.
You'd think that with the christian name 'Priscilla' she'd be fairly easy to find, wouldn't you!
Mother CATHERINE was still alive in 1876 as she was present at the death of her grandchild (another BENJAMIN BUTCHER) who died at Mile End on 18 Sept. 1876 (3yrs old).
        Thank you again.
                                                      Carol B.
