Cumbrians to the USA
« on: Friday 30 May 08 14:30 BST (UK) »
Hello All,
The reasons for Scottish & Irish emigration to the US seems to be very well covered, but there doesn't seem to be much info on Cumbrian emigration to North America in the 1700's.
I'm particularly interested in Cumbrians from the north of the county: did they tend to be Presbyterians swept along with their Scottish neighbours?
I know many of the Scots-Irish were granted land packages in order to settle in the Carolinas, but I haven't seen anything connected to Cumbrians, particularly those who ended up in Pennsylvania.
Any ideas?
Thanks Bob

Hi Bob - Again!

I can't be sure about early on, but certainly some of the people from round here who went to Pennsyvania, went to work on the railroads.

I know there was also quite a gathering in Ontario,- not USA, but quite a number crossed the border.  The nice thing about that is that if you get to a library scuh as Carlisle - all Cumbria? - which has subscribed to Ancestry Library edition, or know someone with the International ediition, Ontario have put large runs of not only indexed bmd's but also scans of certificates on.

You don't pay any extra once you're on to Ancestry, and there is much more info than on ours and quite a number of war deaths.  Death and marriage certificates give where they were born .  Marriage certificates give father and mother of both parties including maiden names.

Maybe a little late for you.  I think the family I wanted were joining earlier emigrants so I don't know where it started.

I'm not sure of all the details, but I know I was told some people went when the farming and also the weaving/spinning industries in the North of England dried up.

I had a good article which I meant to keep, but it might have got lost in the recycling!

Good luck!
