Although on the 1871 census the name is plainly Jesse, and there is a death reg. for Jesse Coster aged 62 in Brentford,  I was startled to see on the 1881 census that Sarah is a widow      Seven years before    

Thinking again - someone who was 62 years old in 1889 wasn't born in 1844, but in 1827.  I have to say, I'm not sure this is the right Jesse Coster

Hi Mum
I did a trawl yesterday looking for Jesse dying and came up with nothing, although there were wars going on in Afghanistan and Africa so he may have been there and died in conflict.  I also had little luck with Joseph as i said. BRICK WALL TIME!!!!

I will get the birth cert for Elizabeth Alice and see if that helps.  I will order it today, should be with me within a week.

Names can change - my Grandfather was born a COSTA......Note the address .........69 Colne Road Twickenham.
This was in the past "BACK ROAD" I checked with Twickenham Museum.

Jesse COSTER Born 1844 Brentford Q4 3. 26 - I have the date 22 Nov from somewhere.

1867 - Q1 Brentford 3a 69 - Jesse COSTAR marries Sarah WEBB.

1876 - Q2 Brentford 3a 42 - Jesse COSTAR Dies - age given as 32.

Yes, that looks like a more proable death reg. for Jesse, given that Sarah was already a widow in 1881   

The name change from Frederick Costa to Frederick Costa Mills is not at all unusual - it happened all the time when a single mother later married - the child took the step-father's name.  I have several of that instance in my tree.  In your case you are a bit lucky because he used both names - often the first surname was dropped altogether and that makes finding the birth reg. more difficult.

Still looking for Joseph too - but I have a sneaking feeling that Joseph = Jesse;  let's see what the birth cert. says

Yes It cold have been something as simple as - He got fed up being called "a big jesse", which as we all know means " a bit of a wimp".

I noticed that you have previously mentioned Mereway Road and Colne Road.  On digging through my records I have John Coster  and his family living at the Butchers Shop, Colne Road in the 1881 Census and Mary Coster and her husband Charles Haynes also living in Colne Road.  For the Mereway Road link I have Sidney Coster's birth in 1908 being registered at No 1.

sorry, still waiting for that Birth Cert - they are rather slow at the moment........

Your Sarah Mills/Coster/Costa, was she 1869-1950? (81 at death - the strange thing is I may have met Sarah - my great aunt - when I was a baby but I would have been ony 1 year old.I only lived about 3 miles away from Twickenham.)
