You can't really assume that Peter's father was called Thomas just because Peter's eldest son was called Thomas. The marriage certificate will hopefully list the father's name.

Have you checked the census records for information on the family and to see when 'Ireland' appears as a birthplace?

This site has Wigan Cemetery burials:

Also lots of other links for Wigan area which might be useful.

Many thanks for that.

I kno wthat at the moment the father being Thomas is very flaky, but as you say the certificate shouls give us the full name.

The first and only census we can find the family in for sure is the UK 1901 and that only says "Ireland", we suspect that we also have Peter in the 1891 but again it only says "Ireland" - very frustrating!

I'll certainly check the Wigan link, many thanks for that it was one I din't know about.

Regards

Mike

This is the detail we obtained from the various certificates that have just arrived:-

Birth certificates

30 August 1879 at Lee's Back Houses off Belle Green Lane, Ince
Catherine Cunliffe dau of Michael lab at iron works and Mary nee Gavigan

2 March 1902 at 5 Francis Street, Ince
Patrick Malloy son of Peter lab at coke ovens and Catherine nee Cunliffe.

Marriage Cert

8 May 1899 at St Williams Catholic Church, Wigan, Lancs
Peter Molloy 26 bac general lab of 41 Longfield Street Aspull son of Patrick farmer
&
Catherine Cunniffe 21 sp of 10 Kirkless Lane Ince dau of Michael general lab

Wits: the mark of P..? Molloy (it's smudged so we can't see what the rest is) & Minnie Cone

So that blows one theory – Peter c1873 Ireland was the son of Patrick, not Thomas as we had suspected.

Encouragingly though all the age indicators for Peter keep pointing to 1873 quite consistently.

Is ANYONE please going to the Dublin records office to do a lookup for us PLEASE!

ALL expenses etc. gladly reimbursed, coffe + sticky bun included!

Glad you got some new information from the certificates. This site might be useful when looking for the family in England:
www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/index.html

Trouble with searching indexes in Ireland (aside from the fact they aren't online or computerised yet) is that there could easily be more than one Peter Molloy born c1873 in Co. Mayo with father named Patrick. Mother's name (even just her Christian name) would help get the correct certificate. Have you tried looking for Patrick and wife ? and other relatives in England? Families often  stayed near each for a generation or so.
