JERVIS FAMILY
« on: Friday 30 May 08 22:44 BST (UK) »
I hardly like to ask for help as I have so little info but.......am searching for an Ellen ? who married a ? Jervis.  She was born in Ireland c1813 according to the  1851 census in England and is listed as living in Liverpool with her 2 year old son James. No sign of husband but  she is listed as married. I have searched on IGI and found a James Jervis from Armagh but this is really a longshot,  Sorry to waffle but help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Don't think you have enough information to start searching in Ireland yet.
Civil registration of births, deaths and Catholic marriages began 1864 (from 1845 for other marriages). If Ellen and husband were married in a non-Catholic ceremony in Ireland there might be a marriage registration for them however they might have married in England and thus should appear in English registers.
Where was the son James born? If in England his birth certificate should list names of both parents which would get you the father's Christian name and mother's maiden name. However there is still the possibilty that Ellen wasn't really married to a Mr. Jervis.
Have you been able to trace Ellen and her son in later census records to see if 'Mr. Jervis' shows up with them?

Hi and many thanks for getting back to me.  I have been out all day but will do some more searching as soon as I have a little more time.  Hopefully tonight! Thanks again.

Right - I'm back for a minute.  All I can find is that Ellen is on the 1851 census as living in Liverpool with her 2 year old son John.  She is listed as married but husband is not around.  By 1861 she is listed as widow.  I have tried IGI and Freebmd but to no avail - mind you, I might not be searching in the right place of course!  I just wondered if Mr Jervis is a sailor or somesuch so may enquire down that line.  do you have any ideas what I could do next. I would be grateful for advice.  Regards.

Found Ellen and son John (your 1st post called him James which confused me) in 1851 and 1871 census records. In both John Jervis' birthplace is listed as Liverpool.

By 1891 John is age 42, married with wife Annie 40 and children Annie 16, Julia 9, Elizabeth 8 (although I suspect 16 year old Annie might be either Annie's daughter or John's from a previous relationship).

Either John's birth certificate or marriage certificate should list his father's name (unless he's illegitimate).

So sorry about the confusion.  I will make enquiries about getting John's marriage certificate.  Thanks again.

Birth certificate might be better as it shoul list both parents. If he's illegitimate there will be no father's name listed but marriage certificate might have a name listed to avoid being called illegitimate in the record.

Thanks for that.  Looked up his birth on the Freebmd and, would you believe it, TWO John Jervis' born June 1849 in Liverpool.  Hope I pick the right one! Regards.
