1841 census occupation abbreviations
« on: Thursday 20 January 05 12:52 GMT (UK) »
Thought it might be a good idea if we started a list of abbreviations we have come accross on the 1841 census.  Sometimes it isn't alsway obvious and not all enumerators followed the rules!

Here's some that I've seen - add yours.

J or Jn        Journeyman
Ap              Apprentice
M S or F S  Male or Female Servant
m               Maker (as in Cabinet Maker, Shoe Maker)
M               Manufacturer
Mt              Merchant
Ind            Of Independent Means
Vis             Visitor
Ag Lab       Agricultural Labourer
Mer Sea     Merchant Seaman
P                Pensioner or Pauper
Rail Lab      Railway Labourer

Anymore for anymore?  ;D
