« on: Thursday 05 June 08 20:50 BST (UK) »
Hi all

Served european war, 2yrs in france and 31 aug 1916 went from officer cadet to 2nd leiutenant. survived ww1 as entered land registry 1919. Any ideas please?

Hi cas21

I'm not surprised you couldn't find his MIC - the TNA has his name transcribed as ROMAVILLE!  I don't even want to think how Ancestry would put it :o

If you go here and type in Romaville or Mark in the first name and Lowe for a surname, you'll find it to see he went on to Captain and you can download for £3.50.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/power-search.asp?searchType=powersearch

I'll see if the other site has it as well.

For his record, officer's paper's were kept separate from other soldier's and are largely preserved. They're just not easily available like the others and it looks like a trip to Kew. More info here

Unfortunately the London Gazette is playing up , so I can't check them properly, but these are all possible mentions:

I can't see his MIC on Ancestry, but there must be a whole batch still to be uploaded as there are a total of 4000 Lowe entries on the NA and only 45 on Ancestry.

I can't see anything that matches his service record in WO 374

There's a few R Lowes in WO 339 but with no further detail, it's hard to say. Nothing on the Pension records either.

Cas21 do you have any more information on him? Did he stay in the army after the war?

Hi All

There is a photograph of him here - http://www1.landregistry.gov.uk/assets/library/documents/bhist-lr.pdf - on page 12. He is not wearing medal ribbons, so the photograph was taken before they were issued (late 1920?). Also, no rank is shown on the shoulders so he must be wearing a ‘cuff rank’ tunic. It might be from when he was first commissioned. He was born in 1881.

I too cannot find him on the NA site. As already said, his officer's papers should have survived.

In the September 1918 Army List it says he became a substantive Lieutenant on 28 Feb 1918, but he was already a temporary Captain from 20 April 1917. These dates might help in searching the London Gazette.

Hi all
Many thanks you guys, I can see why i couldnt find him! He only stayed in the army 1915-1918. He was called to the bar 1906 and practised at chancery bar until 1915. After serving 2yrs in france (?) he entered the land registry 1919 and became chief land register 1941-47. Why oh why he used such an old photo!
Will follow up na and try to get the rest of army records.
Kind regards to all

Unless you already have the info, have you thought about posting to the Occupations board for his work at the Bar?
