Suffolk Burial Index- Abbreviations
« on: Saturday 07 June 08 20:38 BST (UK) »
Hullo folks - hope someone can explain an abbreviation in the comments column.

One of my ancestors has 'al ARTIS' in this column after her name in the Burial Index - does anyone have an explanation for this phrase?  Thanks Yvonne

I think it could mean "alias ARTIS"

Hi granma b,

I think it should be read as "also" rather than as "alias" .

For a number of years in many parishes a married woman's maiden name (if known) was included in the baptisms of her children and her burial record. I believe it is this information which is included in the notes as "al" or "als" NAME.

Sue

Spall - London, Suffolk (Debenham, Cretingham)
Goddard - Sussex (Brighton, Newtimber, Edburton)
Piller - London, Norfolk
Shadbolt - Herts (Codicote, Datchworth)
Young - Sussex (Brighton)
Rose - Army, London
Beckwith - London, Norfolk

Thank you Sue - am more intrigued now as my gt. granma's maiden name was Boast, not Artis!!  They keep us on our toes these ancestors.

Regards Yvonne

I'd check to see whether you have the right person. Is there another possible burial?
