Patrick Joseph Montgomery

My gggrandfather was born in County Armagh, 1834.
He came to New Zealand in 1862. Family folklore is he may have been an "Irish rebel". I believe his mother was a Sarah McCann and his father Patrick Montgomery. I am trying to verify all of this. Any pointers as to how to progress much appreciated.
Regards,

If you know the family's religion and where they lived (parish if not actual townland) you could try looking for church records like baptisms (if they exist) since civil registration of births didn't start until 1864.
