I  think  it  is  just  to strong a  link  with  the right names of George Harding and Sarah Hyde.  It would  require a look at one or two certificates to confirm or deny either way

My  own  gut feeling  is  saying don't discount  the death of George Harding in 1890 whichcannot be ruled simpy because it says the wrong mother.  We all  know  information  on  death certificate can be incorrect and  information  can be mistranscribed on  the index's
kind regards Jenn

Have to agree with you Jenn  :)

The family that came out on the 'Ebba Brahe' are the ones mentioned by David from the 1851 census living in St Pancras. None of them was born in Berkshire.
Daughter Emma Eliza born March 1857 is with them too. 3 more children were born to George and Emma Harding
after they arrived in Victoria. All refer to the father as George William Spencer Harding and mother as Emma Allen.

If only we can find out who Elizabeth Buckingham is  ???

Oh my goodness!  You don't give up  :o !

I can't do a lot of looking this end as I had my 3rd lot of Lazer treatment on my eye (Diabetic retinopathy) yesterday and it is still very painful.  It should calm down in another day or so.  8)

I shall try to read these last posts and digest look forward to the next episode.   :D :D :D :D :D :D

Hi All

I've checked the passenger lists of both ships and information as as follows:-

'Ebba Brahe' left Liverpool 21st August 1857 arrived Melbourne 10th December 1857
George William Harding with his wife, 4 children & infant left the ship on their own account (ie: paid their own way) on 11th Dec 1857 heading for Prahran (suburb of Melbourne)
George's occupation: Chair maker.  The family were English.

"Shalimar' sailed from Liverpool 16th August 1857 and arrived Geelong 11th Nov 1857
George Hardinge 29 - Occupation: Carpenter
Engaged at Trade at Queenscliffe at 12/- per day.
Sarah 27 Elizabeth 1 & Charlotte Infant.
George & Sarah were able to Read & Write and Religion: Church of England
Their native place is given as Buckingham

In the 1851 Census
HO107/1694 Folio: 385 Page: 22
North Town, Cookham Berkshire
George Harding 23 born: Marlow Buckinghamshire was Gardener in the Employ of Sophia Peto.

So, before we go any further, could I please ask which family member are you tracing back from?

Regards

Genni

Hello  Genni

That information you  have kindly  looked  up  should help out quite a bit.

Abiam  is  looking for George Harding  and Sarah Hyde, who married in Cookham Bershire.

I  think  the  waters  were muddied  by  the other George Harding's  who  came  to Australia.

Plus  George Harding  mother's name  on  the  death details  isn't correct  it has Elizabeth BUCKINGHAM  but  thats  is  intersting  that  you  found  he  came from Buckingham.

Hi Jenn

My belief is the George HARDING who married Sarah HYDE in Cookham Berkshire is from Buckinghamshire.

The 1851 census has 2 George Hardings in Cookham Berkshire 1 born circa 1833 with his father James and the 2nd being the Servant born circa 1829 Buckingham.

The passenger list, his death reg, tally with a birth of circa 1829.

Regards

Genni

Hello Jenn and Genni

Well done on getting the shipping details Genni

It certainly looks as though it might be that George was born in Buckingham
and that he is the Servant b c1829 Buckingham on the 1851 census.

Jenn, It is interesting that George's mothers name is listed as Elizabeth BUCKINGHAM
on his death.  You have to wonder if there has been a transcription error and that he/his mother was
born in Buckingham.
I must admit..........I would have to buy the certificate to satisfy my curiosity  :D

Hello everybody,

Thank you very much all of you for your help and genni for the extra details.  I am now quite convinced that George Harding and Sarah Ann Hyde are not 'mine'.

Which is a great pity as I would have loved another hunt in Australia (anyone remember John Wise in 1841 last Christmas?)  My Hardings are certainly Berkshire and don't seem to have ventured far at all.

As I said earlier it would be great for a genuine decendant to stumble across all this work and be able to shout 'Eureka' That's my family!  So once more thank you all your efforts and your interest,
Very best wishes,
Abiam  8)
