Help with missing Cemeteries in Ardwick
« on: Monday 09 June 08 21:14 BST (UK) »
Any help with these two cemeteries would be appreciated.
Looking for Ardwick and Rusholme Road Cemeteries. Where they should be, is Ardwick Cemetery, end of Ford Street off Hyde Road (looks like a football pitch on live search). Rusholme Road Cemetery Corner of Upper Brook Street and Grosvenor Street (looks like a park on live search).
If they no longer exist what happened to the headstone and the records, please.

Thanks for any help

I remember Upper Brook Street from before the war as a boy and I don't recall a cemetery being there then. Don't know about the Ardwick cemetery.

Hi Orinoco

Thanks for your reply.
Someone one another forum gave me this link. http://www.manchester.gov.uk/site/scripts/documents_info.php?categoryID=329&documentID=1086&pageNumber=2

Ardwick Cemetery was opened in 1838 and closed in 1950. The site of the cemetery is now a playing field. It had about 80,000 burials. Including a V.C holder.

Rusholme Road, Chorlton-on-Medlock (Dissenters Burial Ground) 1821-1933
And has been a park ever since.

Manchester Central Library holds the burial and grave receipts for Ardwick and Rusholme Cemetery They also hold extracts from the tombstone inscriptions made before the cemetery was closed.

Thanks Timberman

Hi

more info on cemeteries here

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/Manchester/

It looks like they are saying there may be records at Manchester Library - but I'd be interesting to know the latest on that too

Hello Annie

Thank-you for the link, just had a look at it, it's a shame the two with my relatives in dosn't exist any more :(
I had also posted for information on the Manchester's and Wendi gave me the link to the Manchester.gov site. That's where I found the information.

Hello Milly
I'll give the library a ring and see what they say.

Thanks again

Thank-you Orinoco and Kenhar for your replies,

It's very annoying that they are allowed to do that to a cemetery. >:(
Not only making it into a playing field as in the case of Ardwick but all the 80000 bodies are still there. ??? ??? A lot of respect there then.
