family of David Denham prob born 1824 Dunbar
« on: Wednesday 11 June 08 18:02 BST (UK) »
Looking for information on a David Denham born prob Jan 1824 in Dunbar.
Married an Esther Luke of Coldstream Berwickshire.

They emigrated to US in 1852 on ship Statira Morse and settled for at least a time near or in Detroit Michigan.  David was a carpenter.

This info came from a gentleman living in the Luke family home in Coldstream.
We have been researching the Luke family.
Any clues would be great.
I have yet to find them in America except for the ship passage info.

Hi there,

If you are definite the David Denham, born 18th January 1824, is your man, here is the family in 1841:

Address: Eweford, Dunbar (landward), Haddingtonshire
David Denham, m, 40, agricultural labourer, born in county
Euphemia ", f, 40, -, born in county
William ", m, 20, agricultural labourer, born in county
James David ", m, 15, agricultural labourer, born in county

And his parents in 1851:
Address: Eweford Cottages, Dunbar (landward), Haddingtonshire
David Denholm, m, head, 54, ag lab, Cockburnspath, Berwickshire
Euphemia ", f, wife, 57, -, Stenton, Haddingtonshire

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the Canadian census info.

This has to be our David as he has relative Isabella Luke with him, common family name.
Not sure who that is though born 1841... ours are earlier.  David had a sister in law named Isabella who we do not think married. She was born 15 June 1834 in Coldstream Berwickshire.
I could not find him in MI census and wondered if he went to Canada, Detroit being so close.
Just know from the mother in law's will that he and family were in Detroit at the time.

Wife's name was Esther so not sure about the David born 18 Jan 1824. Will check again with my source.

You guys are wonderful on this board...
I have also posted Luke material on the Berwickshire forum and gotten so many leads.

A brother of Esther's also went to America landing in Nov 1853 on board the Rappahannock. His name was Alexander Luke, born 20 March 1836 and I have yet to find him in MI either. Maybe he also went to Canada.

I was just about to post. ;D

The James (aged 15) I noted in 1841 was actually David. I must have been looking at another page and typed the wrong name. ::) I will go back and correct the error.

David and Euphemia were your David's parents. I can't see either of them in 1861, so they possibly had died before that date or emigrated?

Thanks for correction.
I'll see if I can find the parents here in US/Canada...
my actual line, Thomas Luke, did come on same ship as David Denham and Esther, his wife...
