Seen that one too, Monica. However, I think David shows up as married in 1851 to a Jane Lamb. They are staying in the High Street, Dunbar (as seen in my avatar! :) ) and next door are Janet Burns and William Denham, presumably mother and brother to David.

I did see this one in Midlothian, Elizabeth/Isabella possibly being used.

Address: Echo Bank, Liberton, Midlothian
John Denholm, m, 35, ag lab
Isabella ", f, 30
David ", m, 12
Ebenezer ", m, 10
George ", m, 8
Jean ", f, 6
Thomas ", m, 1

Sorry Monica, you posted again while I was typing! :P

Karen
Thanks for info on Frances...yes, maybe she needed room for herself and didn't want husband buried with first wife...who knows...
I had not had a chance to follow up on the Murray connection. Thought maybe another cemetery...but now not so sure....
Good thinking on your part.

I am in New Jersey...

We have one gal working with us from Windsor Ontario but she is related to a family that marries into the Lukes, or we married into hers...that is Isabella and Esther's mother, Isabella Fairbairn...

I am wondering if you can find anything on their brother Alexander Luke who may also have been in Canada. Born 1836 in Coldstream and emigrated in Nov 1853. I can't find him in Detroit etc.
The mother, Isabella Luke states in her will that the children are living in Detroit. She died in 1856...but they obviously moved around after that.
My guy, their brother Thomas, went to Minnesota and then California and died in Washington State.

thanks again so much
julie

One of my favourite States  ;D  I used to go to Ocean City, NJ and of course my fav. drum corps, Garfield Cadets aka Cadets of Bergen County were originally from NJ.

I'll take a look for Alexander in Canada.

There is a Alexander Luke born Scotland 1832 parents James & Janett who died in North Carolina in 1909 :-\

Glad you like NJ. I am in southern area near Philadelphia...

our Alexander is in 1851 census with parents at Coldstream Berwickshire, age 15 born 1836.
Parents are Alexander and Isabella...as you see the families resued names according to the old Scottish way...
there is more info on this family on the Berwickshire portion of rootschat. Also been in touch with a John who now lives in the old Luke home in Coldstream...he has emailed me  info in addition as to what is posted on rootschat.com...
I just can't find Alexander in US so thought maybe he went to Canada after Detroit...

My research partner Jan found the following:

6 April 1849 Esther Luke married David Denham in Coldstream Berwickshire Scotland

1851 census Coldstream Berwickshire Scotland
David Denham, 26 b England Journeyman cabinetmaker
Esther Denham 23 b Coldstream Berwickshire, wife

1841 census England for Berwick Upon Tweed Northumberland England
John Denham, 50 b Northumberland England laborer
Elizabeth Denham, 55 b Northumberland Eng
David Denham, 15 b Northumberland Eng carpenter ap
Ann Denahm, 20 b Northumberland Eng

1851 census Berwick Upon Tweed Northumberland England
John Denham (Donham in census), 65 b in Scremerston Northumberland Eng, labourer
Elizabeth Denham (Donham in census), 67 b Lowick Northumberland England, wife

1861 census Berwick Upon Tweed Northumberland England
John Denham, 75 b Riffington Northumberland Eng Manager of Coal Depot
Elizabeth Denham, 77 b Lowick Northumberland Eng wife

on the marriage it says David Denham is from the parish of Berwick on Tweed and that gave her the clue.
