Thanks Newbury Chap for your help.

Mum 44 I'm sorry about this, I rushed into this message too quickly, it was just that I found a note, my sister had done some research many years ago, and she found a John Thorn 75 pauper and Eliza 54 living in North Croft Lane, she was wondering if he could possibly have been Edmund's Father.

Hi Jan

Well --  he's the right age - and I'd say it was more than likely that he was related - but I can't see a baptism for Edmond on line, so really have no idea whether he was father, uncle or father's cousin -

Try posting a specific request for Edmond's baptism on this board - someone may have access or be going to the county records -

John was a post man on the 1841 census and a retired letter carrier in 1851 -  so the family business is no help there either  :(

Titchfield, Hampshire: Reed,  Fielder, Cawte, Goddard.
Kent:  Float,  Cutbush.
Wallasey, Cheshire: Carroll, Ledsham.

Newbury Chap,

Interesting 1815 census, I didn't think you could go back that far. Seems to all fall into place though,  Sarah Norris must be Elizabeth's mother, dates all coincide.

Mum 44,

I have put a posting on the look-ups and hopefully we will come up with more information on Edmund & Elizabeth.

At least I've now got his marriage details to Hannah Nutter, June 1856.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Mum 44

someone else has now found me Edmund's death, it was 1866 at Newbury, he returned from London after marrying Hannah Nutter.
He married Hannah in 1856.

Interesting 1815 census, I didn't think you could go back that far.

Only in Newbury - the mayor, Joseph Toomer, took a census of the Borough for some unknown reason. Berks FHS sell a transcript on CD.

Hi Newbury Chap,
Thanks for your reply, yes I have quite a bit of history in Newbury with my family, the New family who owned the London Apprentice Inn, Two Brewers etc..

Ellen Thorn was married to John New, who was a Policeman in Marylebone for a period of time, before moving back to Newbury.

You mention Drummer Arms, do you have much information on that public house as well.   Also the Shoemakers of Newbury, seems that so many of the Thorns were very involved in Cordwaining, both in Newbury and London
