tin man
« on: Tuesday 17 June 08 19:52 BST (UK) »
could anyone please tell me if  a tinman in tinworks in neath, could be interpreted as a boilermaker
i have a wedding certificate that states a father was a boiler maker and i am wondering if i have found the right line as i have found a family living around neath and working in tin works as a tinman/plater, or could this be another type of occupation

kindest regards
michael

Hi Mike...

Don't know if this will be much help  :-\

Possibly he could have progressed or changed to boilermaking?

http://www.wakefieldfhs.org.uk/occupations.htm

TINMAN - a tinsmith one who makes things from tin
BOILERMAKER - a maker of boilers that were used in heavy industry

There is also this link for old occupations

hi cas
they are not my family as i am researching for a friend of mine, but i traced the family from neath back to whitchurch.
thomas bird in 1901 census was born 1858
his father is william bird born 1836
his father william bird born 1813
they all worked in the tin works as tin platers and picklers, but on a wedding certificate dated 1932 it states that a thomas bird was deceased and worked as a boiler maker, this is why i queried wether a plate man was a boiler maker

Checked census 1841/1851  family originated from Monmouthshire

Only link I have is this one, don't have records for this area

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~monfamilies/monprts.htm

Will check to see if I can find anything else
