Isaac Toft ideas needed
« on: Saturday 07 June 08 19:32 BST (UK) »
I have a marriage certificate of Martha Toft 1828 and John Toft 1821 (The dates of birth are from the 1851 census.) marrying at Rostherne 29 Oct 1850.(this just says full age)
On this John gives his father as Isaac Toft a labourer. On the 1841 there are only 3 Isaac Tofts one is 7 years old, one 8 and one 91. The 91 year old married a Mary Toft at Great Budworth in 1786. Mary was 81 on the 1841 census which means if they were the parents of John his mother would have been 61 and his father 71.
Any thought or ideas will be appreciated

His father Isaac Toft may have been deceased  before the 1841 ... it did not alway say so on the certifcates.

Hi svb (and Patrish :))

Not an easy name to research - there are all sorts of potential mistranscriptions!

Have you identified your John in 1841 yet?

I'm wondering if this is him:
HO107/94/7 5 4
Rostherne Parish, township of Marthall with Little Harford?

Dorothy Toft, 50, Farmer, not born in county
John Toft, 20, Ag lab
Elen Toft, 15
Elizabeth, 13
Mary, 6

 :)

Oops, maybe not him after all - there's an 18 year old John Toft at Rostherne Tabley sup - sorry  :-\ Unfortunately confirmed by the IGI showing Dorothy's husband called John.
"My dear, I think the English pronounce it 'appiness"

I'm afraid of no ghost

I think the Rostherne HO107 94 14 8 is the right John. I have tried to find a death for Isaac as Patrish suggests but without success.

I am trying to research my Ancestors Namely John Toft Born 1820-1822

His Father's name was Isaac Toft. John was Born in Nether Tabley Cheshire
he Married a Martha Toft  in 1850  Rostherne.St Mary Cheshire

I am trying to trace Isaac Toft as this name was on the Wedding certificate
as John's Father I wonder if any one can research the Parish church for this
information. as I live out of the UK   ???

Thanks  Bronson

Couple of things .....

In the 1851 census - HO107; Piece: 2163; Folio: 240; Page: 13 - Tabley Superior, Cheshire

John and Martha have Martha's parents and siblings with them - Walter &  Betty Rustidge

They also have a 7 year old daughter, Mary - born Manchester, so it seems that John (more likely than 23 year old Martha) was previously married.

Does this agree with the Marriage Cert ?

Hi Bronson
Welcome to rootschat.    There are lots of websites that might help you.  www.familysearch.org is one we all go to for pre 1837 records.   The LDS church have family history centres worldwide and you can order films of most parish registers to search there. There are other paying sites that have early census records on and Isaac may have still been alive in 1841 and 51 for instance.
Your best bet is probably to go to the Cheshire board and put on a specific request with the name Toft in the title.  That way if anyone else is researching the name they will see it.  Put on as much information as you have.  Occupations and witnesses from the wedding for example.  The more facts you can give the better.

10 years earlier, this is most likely an 18 year old John - he's with a James RUSTIDGE (15), both labouring for an Elizabeth Swain (Farmer) in Rostherne / Knutsford

HO107/94/14; Rostherne; District: 10; Folio: 7; Page: 10

I cant see any sign of an Isaac ..... - as mentioned, you might want to ask for Parish Registers to be investigated. You might also look at the SIT on this site - link at the foot of the screen .... SURNAMES INTEREST TABLE
