Meadow & Pasture
« on: Saturday 21 June 08 18:36 BST (UK) »

I have just got some Tithe Map Apportionments and on them the fields are marked if they are Pasture or Meadow.
Can anyone tell me the difference please.

I think pasture is land that animals are allowed to graze on.

A meadow is a field where the grass is allowed to grow, then cut for hay to be used as animal feed in the winter months.

Thank You. I thought that was it.

Now I have come across 'Croft'. I always thought Croft was the farm house with a bit of land but on the Tithe Map the Croft is a field by itself. I wonder if this is the field that goes with the farm house. Any one any ideas on that one?

My dictionary has

Croft: a small enclosed plot of land, adjoining a house, worked by the occupier and his family, esp in Scotland.
