I don't think it's Horley it could be Hordley, but looks more like Rordley. Many thanks for the interest & ideas.

Have you thought about Radley, south of Oxford? I don't have the PR's for Radley so I can't help you there.

I've found it now with jaywit's help it is Hordley and the Gregory family are there in the form of John Gregory in 1606 - maybe the grandfather of Thomas Gregory? Now it's just the other place which looks like "Long Clerke" ?????
Radley is defenitely out because that wasn't in Oxfordshire until 1974.

I suspect you will need a large scale map of the area. It could just be the name of a tiny hamlet, a farm and a few buildings thats only shown on a large scale map.

Hordley was part of Woodstock manor , Wooton and Blenheim from what i can gather...hope this helps.

Yes many thanks Debz I have now pinned it down to where you say. Regarding Clerke (which is what I think it is) I am beginning to wonder if the person Benet that was being referred to was from London and his occupation was Clerke???
